Is the UK Jobs Market Becoming More Competitive?

Finding a new job may be becoming more challenging as vacancy numbers continue to fall across the UK.

The latest Office for National Statistics figures estimate there were 702,000 vacancies between June and August 2026, down 8,000 on the previous three-month period and the lowest level recorded since February to April 2021.

At the same time, the UK unemployment rate stood at 4.9% between May and July 2026, with 2.5 unemployed people for every vacancy.

For candidates, this could mean greater competition for available roles. For employers, however, larger applicant pools do not necessarily make recruitment easier.

More Applications Do Not Always Mean Better Hiring

When vacancies fall, employers may receive more applications for individual roles.

While this can increase the number of potential candidates, recruitment teams still need to identify the people with the right skills, experience and potential.

Large applicant volumes can also create challenges.

Recruiters may need to review hundreds of applications while ensuring strong candidates are not overlooked simply because their CV does not perfectly match traditional criteria.

Clear job descriptions and effective screening processes therefore become increasingly important.

Candidates May Need to Demonstrate Skills Differently

In a more competitive market, submitting the same CV for multiple vacancies may become less effective.

Candidates can improve their chances by clearly demonstrating how their experience relates to each opportunity.

This could include:

  • Highlighting relevant achievements rather than listing responsibilities
  • Providing examples of measurable results
  • Demonstrating transferable skills
  • Tailoring applications to the requirements of individual roles
  • Explaining career changes or gaps where appropriate

Candidates do not necessarily need to meet every requirement, but they should make it easy for recruiters to understand the value they could bring.

Employers Still Face Skills Challenges

A slower jobs market does not mean every vacancy is easy to fill.

The CIPD's latest Resourcing and Talent Planning report found that more than half of organisations that had attempted to recruit experienced difficulties attracting candidates, particularly for senior and skilled positions.

This creates an interesting recruitment environment.

Employers may have access to more candidates overall while continuing to struggle to find people with particular capabilities.

Recruitment strategies therefore need to focus on quality rather than simply applicant volume.

Candidate Experience Still Matters

A competitive market could make employers feel that candidates have fewer options.

However, lengthy applications, poor communication and complicated recruitment processes can still discourage strong candidates.

People with in-demand skills may continue to have several opportunities available to them.

Providing realistic timelines, communicating throughout the process and making application requirements proportionate to the role can help employers maintain candidate engagement.

Looking Ahead

The UK labour market has changed significantly from the vacancy boom seen earlier in the decade.

Candidates may now face greater competition, while employers are becoming more cautious about recruitment.

But hiring successfully still requires organisations to identify the right capabilities and provide a positive recruitment experience.

For candidates, demonstrating relevant skills clearly could become increasingly important as competition for opportunities grows.
