HR Adviser
Location: Reading - HybridSalary: circa £36,000 – £46,000 per annum - depending on experience Contract: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
We are looking for a proactive and people-focused HR Adviser to join our HR Advisory Team. In this role, you will work closely with HR Partners to deliver a high-quality, professional HR service across a defined area of the University, supporting managers and employees throughout the full employee lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as the first point of contact for managers and employees on a wide range of HR matters
- Provide practical, business-focused HR advice across employee relations, including disciplinary, grievance, absence, and performance issues
- Support managers with people management responsibilities, fostering effective and consistent practices
- Build strong working relationships and act as a trusted HR partner within your assigned areas
- Advise on recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes to attract and retain high-quality staff
- Support key HR processes such as probation management, flexible working, maternity and parental leave, and fixed-term contract reviews
- Work collaboratively with HR Services, Payroll, and Occupational Health to ensure efficient delivery of HR operations
- Contribute to HR projects and initiatives aligned to the HR Strategy
- Deliver HR-related learning sessions alongside People Development colleagues
We are looking for a confident and motivated HR professional who can demonstrate:
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide clear, practical HR advice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build credibility and challenge constructively
- Experience managing or supporting employee relations cases
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
- A commitment to delivering high-quality, confidential HR services
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach
Essential Criteria
- Degree or equivalent experience
- CIPD Level 5 (or working towards) or equivalent knowledge
- Demonstrable experience in a HR advisory or similar people-focused role
